Sunday Morning Deep Thought

FOX "news" really is
FAIR and BALANCED!!
(Who'd a thunk?)

My first internet stops every morning are to Crooks and Liars and Glenn Greenwald. As it happens, both sites were being rather critical of what Station Agent has dubbed the Lamestream Media (abbreviated LaMe) and I would like to call the Lamestream Mediocre, except that most of the time they don't even rise to the level of mediocrity.

Somehow my morning mind (sometimes a little foggy until at least the second cup of strong coffee) had a moment of the utmost clarity. I guess I was thinking, "how does FOX "news" get away with calling themselves fair and balanced, anyway?"

I came up with an answer almost immediately. Got a dictionary handy? Never mind, we can use Merriam Webster's online. Here's the relevant portions of their main entry for the word FAIR (adj.):
1: pleasing to the eye or mind especially because of fresh, charming, or flawless quality

2: superficially pleasing : specious (she trusted his fair promises)

6a: marked by impartiality and honesty : free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism (a very fair person to do business with)

6b (1): conforming with the established rules : allowed (2): consonant with merit or importance : due (a fair share)

6c: open to legitimate pursuit, attack, or ridicule (fair game)

9: not dark (fair skin)
So, quite obviously FOX is implying that they conform to definition 6, but really they mean that they're fair in the sense of definitions 1, 2 and 9. I would say with an emphasis on 2 (and you should really click on the definition of specious if you don't already know it) and 9. And thank Gawd for 6c, though I don't think FOX wanted to imply that definition.

In short, fair and balanced can be taken to mean, "we present you with good-looking, mostly blond newsmodels who at least have the capacity to not fall off of their chairs."

Nor has this escaped those who watch FOX with a rather more critical eye than their target audience do. Media Matters' Simon Malloy did an article on Alternet about the rampant sexism on FOX back in 2006.

A person idly watching Fox News all day, for example, has an excellent chance of glancing at the screen and seeing some partial nudity or a male Fox News personality hitting on a female colleague on the air. Scantily clad women and on-air sexual harassment are the orders of the day over at Fox News Channel.

Take, for instance, Fox News' premier business news program, Your World with Neil Cavuto. Cavuto, Fox News' vice president of business news and the worst James Bond since Timothy Dalton, regularly shows footage of Victoria's Secret runway models and Playboy bunnies -- presumably in the name of business.

Cavuto also has a special obsession with a certain football game played every year in early February: the Lingerie Bowl. Last February, Cavuto interviewed two Lingerie Bowl contenders in their -- ahem -- uniforms. As the News Hounds blog pointed out at the time, this interview was preceded by a one-on-one with Focus on the Family's James C. Dobson, who said that parents must monitor what their children are "looking at because pornography is everywhere, as you [Cavuto] know."

The hypocrisy is phenomenal. Not surprising though when you consider that the greatest consumption of pornography is in the Red States that FOX targets. And they don't really care if a few people in that audience pick up on it either. This little gem appeared in the New York Post (to whom I shall not link) back in 2007. Note the reaction.
CHRISTIAN "media watchdog group" The Resistance is all worked up over the ultra-femme anchors of Fox News. The group's leader, Mark Dice, rants in an e-mail, "I see shorter skirts on the women of Fox News than I do on the prostitutes being arrested on cop shows." Fox responded, "We're always flattered to have everyone talking about us in one form or another."
It may flatter FOX, but I wonder how the objectified newsmodels themselve feel about it? No matter, they're probably grateful for the high paying jobs they hold more for the Clairol™-enhanced outside of their pretty little heads than whatever's on the inside. How grateful? Just go to YouTube and do a search for Megyn Kelly legs" (47 videos!) "Megyn Kelly upskirt" (28) "Gretchen Carlson upskirt" or "Gretchen Carlson legs" (29 videos each.) Or just type "Hot Fox" in the search window and see how it auto-fills. "Hot Fox News Women" has a whopping 314 hits, so don't tell me their viewers aren't obsessing. Thanks to William Mark for this nice paste-up of the T&A FOX shows daily.

FOX News Exploits Sexuality
to Sell Lousy News Programming

But then, I don't really know. FOX isn't even a part of my satellite package.

Phrase "Criminal Element" Emerges

From Administration's Orwellian Play book

The White House decided to cover for blowing up a hospital by rolling out a new term for those pesky Iraqis. You see, the terminology has been a perennial problem for the Bush administration and it's even tripped up the otherwise sharp-as-a-bowling-ball John McCain numerous times. So instead of problematic language that might reveal the person speaking doesn't know a Shi'ite from a Sunni, every one we blow up from now on is a "criminal".

From AP:
A US air strike damaged a hospital in the Iraqi capital's violent Shiite stronghold of Sadr City on Saturday, injuring 20 people, as American forces claimed to have killed 14 militiamen.

The US military said it carried out the strike in Sadr City, a bastion of anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, where US troops in separate confrontations killed at least 14 militiamen since Friday.

"I can confirm that we conducted a strike in Sadr City this morning," a US military spokesman told AFP. "The targets were known criminal elements. Battle damage assessment is currently ongoing."

[...]

The military said it destroyed a "criminal element command and control centre" at approximately 10 am (0700 GMT).

"Intelligence reports indicate the command and control centre was used by criminal elements to plan and coordinate attacks against Iraqi security and coalition forces and innocent Iraqi citizens."

[...]

On Friday, an M1A1 Abrams tanks engaged "criminals" with one round from its main gun after Iraqi army soldiers reported being attacked by small arms fire from a house, the military said.

"Three criminals were killed in the engagements," the military said.

Criminal element? So we were just taking a swipe at who exactly? Gem thieves pulling a job? Is it the Gambino Family in Iraq?

And by the way something, when John Kerry suggested that the war on terror be fought primarily as a global police action, he was laughed out of the election by a massive number of administrators and pundits who were proven wrong every step of the way, though not to the detriment of their continued employment. Now they tell us these people are criminals?

The Debate That Wasn't

...But So Easily Could Have Been

Pretty much everybody in Greater Left BlogSylvania has given an emphatic thumbs down to ABC News for their execrable performance 'moderating' last night's so-called debate between the remaining Democratic primary candidates. Crooks and Liars quickly declared, "Attention ABC: You're Hurting America!" and in a later post linked a lot of the reaction from their journalistic colleagues;
E&P’s Greg Mitchell called it “perhaps the most embarrassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate in years.” The Washington Post’s Tom Shales called it “step downward for network news,” and noted that the moderators delivered “shoddy, despicable performances.” Will Bunch noted, “Quickly, a word to any and all of my fellow journalists who happen to read this open letter. This. Must . Stop.” Salon’s Walter Shapiro added:
This is the way it ends, not with a bang but a whimper. If Wednesday night’s fizzle in Philly was indeed the last debate of the Democratic primary season between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, it will be remembered for, well, not much of anything.

Broadcast to a prime-time network audience on ABC and devoid of a single policy question during its opening 50 minutes, the debate easily could have convinced the uninitiated that American politics has all the substance of a Beavis and Butt-Head marathon.
These are typical responses, with more Here, Here, and Here from Huffington Post, Here from Talking Points Memo, Here from Truthdig... A lot of the posts use adjectives like 'shameful' and 'embarrassing' or Josh Marshall's 'unmitigated travesty.' Many quote Tom Shale's editorial, but the best link to and/or quote Will Bunch at Attytood:
With your performance tonight -- your focus on issues that were at best trivial wastes of valuable airtime and at worst restatements of right-wing falsehoods (my emphasis), punctuated by inane "issue" questions that in no way resembled the real world concerns of American voters -- you disgraced my profession of journalism, and, by association, me and a lot of hard-working colleagues who do still try to ferret out the truth, rather than worry about who can give us the best deal on our capital gains taxes. But it's even worse than that. By so badly botching arguably the most critical debate of such an important election, in a time of both war and economic misery, you disgraced the American voters, and in fact even disgraced democracy itself. Indeed, if I were a citizen of one of those nations where America is seeking to "export democracy," and I had watched the debate, I probably would have said, "no thank you." Because that was no way to promote democracy.
To say that this is the smoking gun that belies the idea of a left-leaning bias in the media would be a gross understatement of the plain truth. To say that ABC has completely blown their cover as anything other than a shill for the Republican party (and we SO need more of those with FOX, CNN, etc., etc., all acting as Republican megaphones /snark) almost goes without saying.

To belabor the point further would accomplish nothing (he says after belaboring the point into the ground.) So, I admit, it is only now that I begin this post properly, with another point brought up in yet another post at DailyKos. The Great Orange Satan himself brings up a seemingly innocuous point that really needs to be expanded upon:
I honestly don't understand why Democrats haven't learned to ignore the bullshit substance-less questions and simply say, "Okay, that's a dumb question. Let's talk about something people care about, like the housing crisis."

Just bypass the idiotic questioners and talk about the things that the Democratic primary electorate actually want to talk about.

Trust me, they'll get brownie points, and the idiot questioners will look like idiots in the process.

Good point. DAMN good point in fact. Why didn't the Democratic presidential candidates - who are vying for the most powerful job in the world, who represent a party that has earned a reputation of being a collection of spineless wimps, who desperately need to shed that characterization - take an opportunity to EMPOWER themselves in the eyes of the US electorate, TAKE CONTROL of the situation and SHOW SOME LEADERSHIP for a change? The fact that they didn't is almost as shameful as ABC's handling of the debate, when you consider it in context.

First let's consider how it might have gone:
Stephanopolous: (Asks bullshit question about lapel flag pins.)

Obama: I don't think that question is of much concern to the American people, George. (bonus points here if Obama can cite survey showing exactly how few people actually care about this) And I won't, by providing an answer, embarrass you for having asked it.

Audience: Overwhelming and sustained applause. Several voices can be heard yelling 'Shut up George. Just shut the f#$k up.'

Obama: Instead I'd like to talk about the direction this country should be taking in foreign policy. That OK with you Senator?

Clinton: I'm good to go.

(Obama pulls an egg timer out of inside jacket pocket, sets it on the podium. He talks for three minutes until the sand runs out, turns the timer over, nods to Clinton, who then talks for three minutes.)

Clinton: (takes the timer, turns it over) OK, now I'd like to talk about my plan to provide affordable health care for all Americans.
...
...and so on,
...and so on,
...
Gibson: OK, I hate to interrupt, but we have to break for commercial now.
During the commercial break the two candidates let the moderator and news director know that if they don't want to completely lose all credibility with their viewers (which they seem to have done regardless, at least as far as Democrats are concerned) they had better play nice after the break.

Considering the fact that the studio audience actually booed, jeered and heckled Charles Gibson as he was going to break, Kos's judgment that they would have gotten brownie points looks pretty sound. So a huge opportunity was lost. And I think that a case can be made that what did happen last night was predictable enough that Obama or Clinton really could have showed up at the studio with an egg timer in their pocket or handbag, prepared for the worst.

Consider the magnitude of this lost golden opportunity. An act like described above could well have completely destroyed a key weapon in the Republican arsenal: media complicity. This would have been such a DEFINING MOMENT in the campaign as to have a resonating effect on every moment that came after. Every news item on every media outlet, TV, radio and print would have instantly been framed with the expectation that bullshit was now going to be called bullshit. Every pundit would be aware that what they said was actually being listened to and evaluated not only for its truth but also for its relevance. The substitution of style for substance would have been utterly forestalled, and with very little effort. And I for one believe that on substance the Democrats can cruise to a win in November.

What a crying shame that only Kos thought of this, and only after the fact. An independent media, free of undue corporate influence, is as essential as independent politicians and parties. And you're not going to get the latter unless you fight for the former.

The Most Unlikely Ally

Joseph Stalin's Connection
to Fascism in America

In the usual way that Americans have been taught to view history Joseph Stalin was an unrepentant monster whose Communist government suppressed and murdered its own citizens, denying them their rights and imprisoning them in cruel and inhuman gulags for the slightest act of disagreement with his regime.

As I have written before on my old blog, Friendly Neighbour, Stalin was, even after his death, an unwitting ally of far-right forces within the American system.
Stalin, while a valiant ally in the war, stands out as one of history's biggest meanest bastards. Estimates of the number of Soviet citizens killed by Stalin range as high as 20 Million. Most died by starvation as the result of disastrous agricultural policies that removed subsistence farmers from their land in misguided collectivization efforts. Many more died as a result of Stalin's extreme paranoia, taken out and shot or tortured to death in the infamous gulags. Stalin was evil.

...[I]n the post-war era, a great lie was sold to the American people, one I believe a vast majority of Americans still believe today. That lie was a great propaganda coup, providing the right wing with a magic hammer with which to beat its enemies mercilessly. That lie led to the cold war. That lie was that the evils of Stalin's Soviet Union were somehow the inevitable result of Marxist-Leninist doctrine. Which anyone even passingly familiar with socialist doctrine can tell you is absurd.
A simple comparison that clarifies the effects of this great lie is this; The Red Scare was to post-war America as International Jewry was to Nazi Germany. The great threat that justifies all excesses. The great brush to paint all our enemies. The Red Scare.
My point was and remains that it wasn't Marxist doctrine that caused Stalin to be a megalomaniac, it was his paranoia and his embrace of totalitarian tactics to eliminate any threat to his rule. The great purges carried out in the 1930s are but one case in point.

The common belief that the cold war was a struggle between western democracy and Soviet Communism was a great lie. For one thing Soviet Communism didn't fit the egalitarian model at all. There was a privileged class of party members, military officers and secret policemen who lacked for little, lived in Dachas, rode around in chauffeur-driven hand-built automobiles and feared the peasantry no less than did their czarist predecessors. So Communism in the Soviet Union was a lie. But why on earth would the western world go along with that lie, even exaggerate it when it would have been much easier to call Stalin and his successors out for their hypocrisy?
“A lie would make no sense,
unless the truth were felt to be dangerous.”
- Carl G. Jung -
The simple answer to this is that this Soviet lie served the purposes of the corporatists to a tee to keep up the idea that the Soviet Union represented the inevitable outcome of Marxism, that is that it led to totalitarian regimes like that of Stalin. Which may have some truth to it, but it is simply astonishing how quickly the idea was extended to include not only Communists, but later 'Communist sympathizers', aka 'Pinkos' (not quite 'Red' in other words,) trade unionists, and later anyone who had the audacity to consider themselves anywhere to the left of center. Indeed, by the time Ronald Reagan ran for office they were using a new rhetorical technique - they began alluding to liberalism as 'the L word,' giving the impression that it was something so obscene that it couldn't be talked about in polite company.

Another device was in play - the ratchet effect. As this unrelenting stream of vitriol (based on absolutely nothing by the way) was directed on anyone to the left of center, inevitably people started moving out of the line of fire. They stopped calling themselves liberals even if they were by any definition of the word. They now self-identify as progressives or even moderate conservatives. The result of that was that the line that defined where 'left of center' was also moved to the right. So, in the next iteration (or turn of the ratchet in my analogy) people who had previously been to the right of center were called out, and some of them moved across the new 'middle' line - to end up on what used to be the far right. You can still see this process in effect anytime someone like Rush Limbaugh points to someone who is really quite moderate in their position and describes them as being from, not just the left, but the far left. Conversely, the term far right is almost never used in the United States. Which should give people cause for concern. The real outcome of this is class warfare in America with only the upper class having declared or holding any weapons.
"Surely, in the history of lies told to the population, this is the biggest lie.
In the history of secrets, withheld from the American people,
this is the biggest secret: that there are classes with different interests in this country.

To ignore that--not to know that the history of our country is a history of slaveowner against slave, landlord against tenant, corporation against worker, rich against poor--is to render us helpless before all the lesser lies told to us by people in power...

...If we as citizens start out with an understanding that these people up there--the President, the Congress, the Supreme Court, all those institutions pretending to be "checks and balances"--do not have our interests at heart, we are on a course towards the truth.
Not to know that is to make us helpless before determined liars."

Just look at how successful this undeclared class warfare has been. The Republicans opposed Social Security when it was first introduced on the grounds that it led to the 'slippery slope towards communism.' The fact that it helped the vast majority of Americans survive was not an effective counterargument in their narrow rightwing view. And they are STILL trying to dismantle the most successful program in the country's history. They have successfully blocked any form of universal health care with the same slippery slope canard. "OOOH - it might lead to communism. Slippery slope - ooga booga. Be very, very afraid." So you see how the ghost of the long dead Joseph Stalin is still acting as an ally to Corporate Fascist America. The frickin' ownership society they envisage can hardly be differentiated from a slave state.

It's really tragic that a large number of working class Americans continue to vote against their own interests for two reasons. The first is that they are afraid of being labeled 'far left' by the flying monkey brigade of Limbaugh and his putrid ilk. The second is that they cling to the myth of the American dream. They hope that somehow, against all odds, they will pass through that velvet curtain into first class, and they don't want to piss in the complimentary champagne before they get to stretch out in their generous double wide reclining seats.

The fact is, social mobility (the likelihood that you will end up in a different income bracket than your parents) is MUCH less in the US than it is in the rest of the western industrialized world. And as everybody knows, the gap between rich and poor is opening up into an absolute chasm that you will never cross if you are currently living modestly.
"In America everybody is of the opinion that he has no social superiors,
since all men are equal,
but he does not admit that he has no social inferiors,
for, from the time of Jefferson onward,
the doctrine that all men are equal
applies only upwards, not downwards."
-- Bertrand Russell --
I will further cannibalize my old post by plagiarizing it's close (I hope the author doesn't go after me.)
In the opening pages of Tom Clancy's Patriot Games the hero, Jack Ryan is visiting London. Unfamiliar with the English practice of driving on the left side of the road he checks to the left, where he expects traffic, then steps out onto the road and is nearly killed by a bus coming from the right. It seems to me a fitting image of what has happened to the US in the last 7 or 8 decades. While paranoically obsessing about a perceived threat from the left, America has left itself wide open for a takeover from the corporate right.
To tie this in to what's happening today, one needs only this quote from a pre-eminent veteran of the cold war.
"Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear-kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor-with the cry of grave national emergency. Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it."
-- General Douglas MacArthur --
A chillingly familiar theme in the post 9/11 America. It's hard not to see how the fear-mongering inspired by Stalin is just like that inspired by Osama bin Laden or Saddam Hussein. Stalin was of course the first bogie man bent on world domination and in possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Which brings me to another pithy and pertinent quote.
"Neither a man nor a crowd nor a nation can be trusted to act humanely
or to think sanely under the influence of a great fear"
-- Bertrand Russell --

This post was written to set the table for a series of posts I intend to do under the heading of The History of Fascism in America. (THOFIA) It should fit in well with those of you who are already Naomi Wolf fans. It might rub some of you the wrong way if you believe the fascist influence to have begun with George W. Bush, his father, or even his grandfather. But that cannot be avoided.
"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
-- George Orwell --

The Face of Thugs

I put off writing about this, but I've thought about it all day. To me, this is absolutely unbelievable.

In response to the Democrats inviting 12 year-old Graeme Frost to address the nation in response to one of the President's recent Saturday radio addresses on the S-CHIP bill, a storm blew up amongst those in the thugatropolis of the 'Insane Right.'

Who the hell goes to someone's 'home and business' with the intent of harassing them all because they don't believe this party only earns a certain combined annual income, is living 'higher on the hog' than claimed, and by no means - goddamnit - do they need or qualify financially for any state help in caring for two children severerely injured in a car accident - even though one who is still severely brain injured? Who the fuck does THIS!?
malkin-bitch.jpg
Michelle Malkin. Why? Because as Maha helpfully points out....
And the point of all this? To “prove” that the Frosts are secret zillionaires who don’t deserve government help with their medical bills. In this, the loon brigade is, as usual, embarrassingly, completely, unquestionably, flat-on-their-faces wrong. I’ll give you one guess about whether that’s going to stop them.

Here, I'm thinking even 'skank' might be too kind a label for the likes of her.

She is downright nasty. Evil.... I always feel like I need to wash my hands 1000 times plus brush my teeth a few more times for good measure. She's hateful, downright hate-filled. Christ, I find it hard to believe she's actually someone's mother she's so incompassionate.

But by far, the most asinine remark comes from one of Malkin's compatriots, Mark Steyn, at National Review, one of the famous keyboardists:
The Democrats chose to outsource their airtime to a Seventh Grader. If a political party is desperate enough to send a boy to do a man's job, then the boy is fair game.

That's laying down the gauntlet, tough guy. But like Steyn points out in his piece even his 7 year-old is fair game. What fucked up people and what skewed values.

They've been taken to task - mightily. Here's a sampling from around my blogosphere.

Fixer @ Alternate Brain; Think Progress; and Kevin Hayden @ American Street

Ms Michele's complaints of her privacy being invaded - John Cole at Balloon Juice. And the indefatigable Dave Neiwert at Orcinus offers up more of Ms Malkin's handiwork, as does Maha - again. Malkin has quite the pattern going on.

But I've saved the best for last. Firedoglake heated up a bit about this yesterday in between FISA and Tom Tancredo: Christy; Jane, & TRex.

And now there's even more today - Wednesday. The Baltimore Sun has a bit of an update on the Frost family and the fallout from all this shit. Here's Christy is at again over at firedoglake addressing that fallout.

And as for the fucking wingnuts - have they examined the bill and are thus discussing the bill's "inadequacies." Oh of course not. True to predictable form they're attacking the messenger and as they have so nastily illustrated, all bets are off and everyone is fair game.

Is turn about fair play?

Whaddaya Know?

Who knew? Today, September 28 is International Right to Know Day, and the beginning of International Right to know WEEK. Here's the skinny, from the Office of the Canadian Information Commissioner:
Around the world, September 28th is celebrated as International Right to Know Day. This began in Sofia, Bulgaria at an international meeting of access to information advocates who proposed that September 28th be dedicated to the promotion of freedom of information worldwide.

The goal is to raise citizens’ awareness level about their right of access to information under the control of government institutions. These celebrations are aimed towards the citizenry, a non specialized clientele.

“…to collaborate in promotion of the individual right of access to information and open, transparent governance. The group of FOI Advocates also proposed that 28 September be nominated as international “Right to Know Day” in order to symbolize the global movement for promotion of the right to information. The aim of having a Right to Know Day is to raise awareness of the right to information. It is a day on which freedom of information activists from around the world can use further to promote this fundamental human right and to campaign for open, democratic societies in which there is full citizen empowerment and participation in government.” (www.righttoknowday.net/index_eng.php)
The RTK week is celebrated in Canada to promote the right to information as a fundamental human right and to campaign for citizen participation in open, democratic societies.
Sounds like something bloggers should be getting behind, especially those of us on the left who have been complaining about;
  1. the Bush administration, the most secretive government in America's entire history,
  2. the Mainstream Media (MSM, aka the Corporate Owned Media (COM)) spewing administration talking points 24/7, distracting us with celebrity trivia, and downplaying the real stories when possible,
  3. the decline of the education system, due to everything from government idiocy like NLCB to local schoolboards being taken over by those who want your kids as well as theirs to be taught 'intelligent design' instead of how to think intelligently.
The scope of the issue as I see it goes well beyond just the Freedom of Information Act - it also encompasses such things as rules governing the ownership and use of media outlets and the right to know what multinational corporations - some of them more powerful than the majority of governments - are doing that affect you, your community, and your planet. "The Business and Human Rights Program is working with coalition partners such as Friends of the Earth to increase pressure on the US Government to disclose corporate behavior around human rights and environmental issues through the introduction of International Right to Know (IRTK) legislation in Congress." (Amnesty International)

Another way of looking at it is as the flip side of the first amendment right of free speech - the right to hear the truth is just as important. Too many people are caught in the trap of believing the gross propaganda spewed daily by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, etc., etc., etc... because that's what the multinational corporations that own the media want them to hear. The fine citizens of Greater Left Blogsylvania provide some balance, but reach too few people without the billions of dollars available to the major networks and cable channels. Even that voice is in jeopardy of being silenced with the fall of the principle of internet neutrality.

I think the truth-based community should grab hold of this idea and give it a big boost. Maybe a blogswarm or something, we have a whole WEEK to put together some good posts. Here are the ten principles on the right to know, from the justice initiative organization. Let's get started.

Whaddaya think?

Faith, Science, and the Art of Disbelief

I confess. Pluto bugs me. It really, really bugs me. And the reasons are compelling. Let us review...

When I went to school, Pluto was a planet. There were 9. I understood the universe. Now that Pluto has been voted off the island, I feel uncomfortable, old school, like my education was somehow wrong. The scientists voted, and they voted for 8. It bothered people when they heard the earth was round, too.

9, originally uploaded by Leo Reynolds.

OK, I'm over it, but here's what really does bother me: the Religious Right and their War on Science. (And for the record, I personally believe that the rabid radical right has hijacked religion as merely another political tool to achieve their desired ends. That's right, faux faith on parade. Sincere faith has a whole different feel.) It comes down to this: the decision by the science community to defrock Pluto of planetary status provides fodder to the anti-scientists. It allows them to disregard any scientific evidence that undermines their political objectives. It allows them to say, "See, you can't trust science. It's all wrong. Any assertion is as valid as any other. There is no Global Warming. Evolution is just a theory..." And on and on and on. Al Gore's book, The Assault on Reason, delivers a blistering assessment of the fruits of this strategy.

Scientists have joined together in resisting the war on science. In fact, "in 2004, 62 renowned scientists and science advisors signed a scientist statement on scientific integrity, denouncing political interference in science and calling for reform. On December 9, 2006, UCS released the names of more than 10,000 scientists of all backgrounds from all 50 states—including 52 Nobel Laureates—who have since joined their colleagues on this statement." The Union of Concerned Scientists has documented evidence of political interference in their "A to Z Guide to Political Interference in Science", organizing the evidence using four broad categories:

  1. The Environment
  2. Public Health
  3. Pollution and Contamination
  4. National Security and Other

"From air pollution to Ground Zero, the A to Z Guide showcases dozens of examples of the misuse of science on issues like childhood lead poisoning, toxic mercury contamination, and endangered species."
Speaking of Evolution...Like others, I have wondered why the Religious Right is so resistant to the notion of Evolution. It's really quite simple: If they can get you to ignore science over the first line of the Bible, they can get you to ignore science anytime, anywhere. It's the alpha, the gateway, the beginning. They assert that if you want to stay in the group, which for some is an important cultural heritage, you must believe the literal interpretation of the first line of the Christian Bible: "In the beginning, God created..." The ability to lead people to reject carefully, conservatively collected scientific evidence--to suspend their disbelief--is obviously valuable. Creation is the beginning, and it's a slippery slope from there. Next thing you know, you're willing to believe that war is peace, censorship protects the right to free speech, spying on America protects the right to privacy, and that forcing a new style of government on a region through military assault and occupation is really "Freedom on the March."

And so the 2008 Republican presidential candidates have bravely signed up to do their part to fight the War on Science. These chickenhawks walk the Creation Science walk. Perhaps they have visited the Creation Museum described here by our resident unruly minister, RevPhat. It's bad enough that science is attacked through doctored government reports and our own complicit corporate media, but the advance of "Creation Science" marks the American classroom as the new front on the War on Science.

Phil Plait of Bad Astronomy, a site I rather enjoy, describes the current tension between politics and science well:
In this case, science and politics are at exact opposites: science wants information to uncover underlying truths, while political operatives use information as a tool — or, more accurately, a weapon — to further political gain despite the truth. Politicians may actively distort the truth if it disagrees with their pre-determined goals, whereas with scientists, truth is the goal...

I don’t care if you’re Republican or Democrat, what’s happening in the U.S. is a wholesale dismantling of one of our most precious resources: the scientific ability to sort truth from fiction.
(Click to enlarge; it's worth it! H/T SadButTrue)

How can we let Freedom ring, if we can't even let Truth ring?
As a scientist, I object.

P.S. I find it amusing that the newly discovered space object whose discovery in 2005 launched the recent debate about what constitutes a planet and eventually led to Pluto's excision from the planetary family, has been named Eris, after the Greek goddess of discord and strife.

Eerily Familiar

Doesn't this look and sound eerily familiar?

US agencies (played so convincingly by Harvey Keitel and others) are closing in on the leaders of the terrorists. They have them in the cross-hairs. They phone home by high-tech satellite link for permission to pull the trigger, but can't get those woosie REMFs in the White House to give the OK.

Oh yeah, that was the plot of the onerous ABC/Disney propaganda film Path to 9/11, except that little piece of fiction (written by reight-wing Josef Goebbels wannabe Cyrus Nowrasteh) erroneously tried to saddle Bill Clinton with the blame - and was conveniently scheduled to air just before the November, '06 midterm elections.

Well it didn't work, lots of Republicans got kicked to the curb by the voters, no Democrats lost their seats. Now we find the EXACT OPPOSITE scenario did play out in reality.

Watch.

Moyers on Murdoch

At last, there is someone keeping Keith Olbermann company in the camp of journalistic integrity. The return of Bill Moyers to PBS is one of the most welcome developments in recent memory for truthseekers.

This commentary on the capitalist predator Rupert Murdoch is 'la crème de la crème.' Utterly brilliant in both the observations made and the powerful means of expressing those observations. My favorite line among many in this short piece, "When it comes to money and power he's carnivorous, all appetite and no taste - he'll eat anything in his path."

BILL MOYERS JOURNAL | Moyers on Murdoch | PBS
The most striking thing about this piece to me is how many concerns Moyers brings together into only a few minutes of speaking. Murdoch of course personifies the soulless sociopathic motives of the multinational corporate set. Then there's our fear of control of the news media (Murdoch's News Corporation's holdings include the hated FOX "news" channel and the New York Post.) It's not so much that he owns "the sun, the moon and the stars" of the media heavens, but that he actively uses that ownership to substitute his own 'truth' in the light they cast on readers and viewers. He has positioned himself as the prince of propaganda. "The public be damned", indeed.

And sadly, Moyers also points out that Murdoch controls politicians on both sides of the aisle - in more than one country. I guess that's what you do when you have more money than God. For me, Murdoch personifies what is wrong with the world.

Defense Spending Is the Biggest Threat to National Security

UPDATE: Military Industrial Complex totally out of control, pays contractors to destroy multi-million dollar jets.

Bill Clinton pointed out something that's been bothering me since the 1980s. Missile Defense is a crock of shit. There, I said it. This terse statement may even lure a troll from a fake think tank over to this blog with a link to some garbage study. Whatever.

No one in power has the will to question these people. Credit to Bubba. He did open his mouth, and I don't know what the hell got into him. Hillary must be livid about it. Can't you hear the pundits now? "She's weak on defense! She's weak on defense! Bubba said the missile shield is a massive waste of money! They want us all to die!"

Weak on defense? It's impossible to be weak on defense in America. We spend more than the rest of the world. What we spend it on is often useless scams like missile defense or enough nukes to blow up the world a gazillion times. That kind of redundant spending is how you go out of business quickly.

Even the ice cream man knows this.

Recently John Murtha took a stab at private contractors in Iraq.
We got 126,000 contractors over there, some of them making more than the secretary of defense. How in the hell do you justify that?
Murtha was criticised for making the point that so many well compensated, non-military personnel in Iraq might just hurt the morale of the troops who keep getting their tours extended. It hurts the morale of citizens at home who were told the war would last "six days, six weeks, I doubt six months" and would pay for itself with Iraqi oil and wait until you see those cheap gas prices. Instead we see inflated contracts going suspiciously to companies that don't have to bid on them.

A congressional report released this week by Henry Waxman's committee called "More Dollars, Less Sense: Worsening Contracting Trends Under the Bush Administration," revealed that 50.2 percent of Iraq contracts awarded fell short of "full and open competition" to the tune of $206.9 billion. Taxpayers spent $103 billion on contractors in 2006, a 43 percent increase from 2005.

A contractor named Michael Hardiman wrote an op-ed criticizing Murtha. His article is all over the internet as if it's convincing in anyway.

Hardiman makes several astounding claims in his article.
By hiring contractors, the government can bring on experts in their fields, from personal security to linguistics to crop irrigation, without incurring three major long term costs of permanent government employees: pension, medical coverage and job security. When the job is done, the contractors are gone.

So, you contractors don't provide benefits for your employees who are risking their lives--916 contractor deaths since reconstruction began--and that you pass those savings along to the tax payers. Could you maybe help the taxpayers out a little more by bidding before you sign the contracts at the price you just made up. The price that covers your massive overhead. What does your CEO make? What benefits does he or she get?

The role of security contractors in Iraq has been to take the pressure off of our soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen by taking on defensive and protective responsibilities. This has reduced the need for ever longer deployments which keep our troops away from their families, and has saved the taxpayers money.

The length and frequency of deployments is at a breaking point. How can you even consider using that as a positive in your insane little argument?

The military industrial complex has it's foot on the throat of the American middle class and on the throats of billions of other poor people around the world. The redistribution of wealth upward continues and again, they're using fear, and if that doesn't shut you up, they'll frustrate you with endless spin. What these robbers fail to recognize is that soon all the wealth of America will be stolen--shipped off to Halliburton headquarters in Dubai or wherever crooks stash their booty. Then the shell is all that's left lacking anything to protect.

How Did This Whole War Thing Get Started Again?

Last week, Democratic Representative David Obey of Wisconsin kicked the living shit out of the Washington Post for helping to lead the march to war in Iraq.

Then today come the news that the Pentagon officially shot down the connection between Iraq and al-Qaida.

From AFP:
Interrogations of Saddam Hussein and seized documents confirmed the former Iraqi regime had no links with Al-Qaida, a Pentagon report said Friday, contradicting the US case for the 2003 invasion.

A two-page resume of the report was published in February, but on Friday the Pentagon declassified the whole 120-page document.

Cheney quacked indignantly in response.

From AP:

Vice President Dick Cheney repeated his assertions of al-Qaida links to Saddam Hussein's Iraq on Thursday as the Defense Department released a report citing more evidence that the prewar government did not cooperate with the terrorist group.

Cheney contended that al-Qaida was operating in Iraq before the March 2003 invasion led by U.S. forces and that terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was leading the Iraqi branch of al-Qaida. Others in al-Qaida planned the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Why does the Pentagon hate America?

The Young Turks immediately kicked Cheney in the chest and screamed, "This is Sparta!"

Bush's response to all this was, "What part of I don't give a fuck what anyone else says don't you people get?" Then he added 12,000 more troops to the surge.

BYU isn't down with the whole thing. Especially Cheney.

Just Pretend and We'll Pretend to Believe You

These scientist people are trying to tell us something. I'm not sure what it is, you see, they're so vague. I mean, check out this headline from CNN.Com:
Draft of climate report maps out 'highway to extinction'
Hmm. When they use such convoluted language, I just have no idea what these people are talking about.

Or do I?

Could I merely be pretending I don't get what the words "Highway to extinction" mean?

Why would a person pretend not to get what's going on here with this whole global warming thing?

Or, better still, why would someone, say, for example, the CORPORATE OWNED MEDIA, pretend not to get that the person pretending not to get global warming was pretending?

While we're pondering these mind-numbing, astounding phenomena, here's another very clear message, this time from the people of Sydney Australia, population: roughly 4 million.

Of course, it's all a swindle. The people in Sidney are chumps, just like me and Al Gore and all those scientists, right?

Here's a documentary that debunks global warming. Please, watch it. It's a great argument against global warming. If you pretend. If you just pretend. Really, really hard.

Happy April fools, ya'all.

I call it Divine Intervention

Apparently there's a long history of naming bombs after divinity. Just a casual reading for this article found that "kamikaze" means "divine wind" and India's first nuclear test in the 70's was named "smiling buddha."

But Bushco must have wet their pants bigtime with this inspired (not) name. As OneCanadian notes:

DIVINE STRAKE is one of several ”DIVINE“ efforts under the Hard and Deeply Buried Target Defeat (HDBTD) program. DIVINE WARHAWK consists of deep underground operational tunnel facility defeat demonstrations using advanced weapons at the White Sands Missile Range. DIVINE HELCAT was a 2004 reconstitution exercise to determine reconstitution time for the C3I tunnel facility at Nevada Test Site (NTS). Also in 2004 planning began for DIVINE HATES, which is a WMD production and storage tunnel complex functional defeat effort...

The DIVINE STRAKE full scale test is planned to be a large-yield, buried burst detonated at the Nevada Test Site. Divine Strake would appear to be associated with the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator RNEP, or possibly the B61-11 Earth-Penetrating Weapon...

Okay, we name our weapons of mass destruction after God. How do we name our instruments of peace?

* Divine Strake test cancelled.
* RustyParts has a good theological discussion of naming bombs divine.
* Defense Threat Reduction Agency Director Dr. James A. Tegnelia noted in the cancellation announcement that "I have become convinced that it's time to look at alternative methods that obviate the need for this type of large-scale test." Yeah, lets pray its not a live test in Iran.

The Path to Truthiness

Stealth Swiftboat Wearing Corporate Business Suit...
Today, Think Progress posted information on the “docudrama”, “The Path to 9/11” that will air on ABC on September 10 and 11. Written by conservative Cyrus Nowrasteh, the film is being promoted on ultra-rightwing sites across the web. (Part of a 9/11 TV blitz.) Director, David Cunningham, is hedging on the film's accuracy, asserting “this is not a documentary”, though it's being promoted as “based on The 9/11 Commission Report.” Very Truthy, indeed.

William Rivers Pitt's excellent perspective piece posted at Truthout, Clinton, 9/11 and the Facts, a MUST READ, sharply contrasts this “drama” with the reality of Clinton's aggressive anti-terrorism programs, revealing the truth of the GOP's castration of Clinton's efforts to protect the nation. A tiny morsel:
In fact, Gramm was compelled to kill the bill because his most devoted patrons, the Enron Corporation and its criminal executives in Houston, were using those same terrorist financial networks to launder their own dirty money and rip off the Enron stockholders. It should also be noted that Gramm's wife, Wendy, sat on the Enron Board of Directors. (Read the rest...)
Media Matters (posted 9/1/06, 7:24pm) has more. Furthermore, they plan to brainwash the children...

To Do List: Read the full article, and those that follow to get armed with the facts. Write to ABC-Disney. Call ABC-Disney. Tell them that Fox's nose-dive is contagious, and that you will boycott them and their advertisers forever if they deliberately mislead the American public by airing this “drama.” Keep your eye on Source Watch, and keep your feet on “The Path to Democracy!”

Path to 9/11: YouTube Videos

If you've been watching this blog you're aware of the unconscionable propaganda miniseries ABC has scheduled for this Sunday and Monday. Here are some reactions on YouTube. First up, from Countdown, Richard Ben-Veniste, who was on the 9/11 commission on which the series is supposedly based.

Next, from the C-span footage of the actual 9/11 commission testimony, Republican Fred Fielding questions George Tenet about the so-called opportunity to take out Osama bin Laden. Hat-tip to YouTube member ChurchCommittee.
Key Scene in ABC's 9/11 Docudrama is a LIE - Part 1

In this next clip, Republican Senator Slade Gorton tries the same stunt with witness Richard Clarke.
Key Scene in ABC's 9/11 Docudrama is a LIE - Part 2

Notice that in both these clips key Republican commission members try to act as witnesses, putting ideas into the public record that they know are not true, and trying to manipulate the testimony of the real witnesses. Further, they are trying to promote the same untruths that are presented in the ABC 9/11 'mockumentary.'

The Ministry of Make Believe

When History Offends...Rewrite it!

In his novel, 1984, George Orwell portrays a time when, “History and memory are actively erased and rewritten so as to support the omnipotence and infallibility of The Party and its pronouncements” (plot summary, here). Orwell wrote:
“And if the facts say otherwise then the facts must be altered. Thus history is continuously rewritten. This day-to-day falsification of the past, carried out by the Ministry of Truth, is as necessary to the stability of the regime as the work of repression and espionage carried out by the Ministry of Love.”
We have been Ministried by Bush before:
  • The 2000 presidential campaign introduced us to Bush's family theatre ranch in Crawford. Despite the “family history” feel, it was an August, 1999 purchase. The newly built Bush theatre “ranch house” served as a stage and was scheduled for completion election night, November 1999--a place where Bush, the “windshield rancher”, likes to spend time. (Shhhhh, don't tell.)

  • Pfc. Jessica Lynch was rescued by U.S. forces on April 1, 2003 in a dramatic, heroic rescue. Lynch's recovery was later (5/15/03), revealed to have been staged.

  • On April 9th, 2003, we were presented with images of angry Iraqi citizens, pulling down a statue of Saddam. It was later reported (7/3/04) that the fall was “stage-managed” by the Army.

  • On May 1st, 2003, we were fed images of Bush's dramatic jet landing on the U.S.S. Lincoln aircraft carrier, with his costume flight suit and declaration, “My fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended.” The media fawned. We later learned that
    Bush's helicopter was in range
, and the jet landing was an unnecessary, highly choreographed theatrical addition.
  • And we are being Ministried again:

DISNEY'S PATH TO 9/11 IS MORE BUSH MAKE-BELIEVE.

This propaganda is rewriting the history of the past to create a desired history of the future (maintaining control of congress to avoid checks, balances, accountability). I call this Disney's “Ministry of Make Believe.” Pure fantasy.

    That Damned Liberal Media

    People, You're Being Played!
It seems like nearly every piece we've done lately has a common element in it, regardless of the actual subject matter. That common element is the deliberate misrepresentation of the facts by the mainstream media to the American people. I wrote a piece about it HERE a few weeks ago, but it should be a regular feature here at Les Enragés, because it is one thing that really gets us enraged on a daily basis.
I was particularly incensed recently when US District Court Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled that the administration had 'undisputedly' broken the law in the NSA wiretapping scandal. This was HUGE news, the implication being that the pResident's actions were not only unconstitutional but CRIMINAL. So, what were the headlines about for the next several days? The bogus arrest of a suspect in the ten year old Jon Benet Ramsey murder case. On Southpark, this would have led to a declaration of 'shenanigans', and the entire mainstream media would have been run out of town.

In more recent pieces, we have the upcoming ABC whitewash of the events of 9/11/01, the NPR 'slant' on the Dixie Chicks' story, Keith Olbermann's exposé on the odd coincidence of terror alerts with other news embarassing to the GOP or their corporate masters.. ..the list goes on and on. In this recent piece Jump to the Left provided an essential link to this Take Back the Media article. I mention it to bring it into greater prominence for those of you who don't click on every link. It highlights the ties between BushCo™ and ClearChannel Worldwide Inc., sponsors of 'patriotic rallies' worthy of Nazi Germany in the 1930's.
"While Clear Channel promoted these as patriotic rallies, the attendees obviously felt otherwise. In addition to waving their provided flags, they also held signs condemning their fellow Americans - liberals, Hollywood, the Dixie Chicks. They were not so much patriotic rallies as pro-war rallies, and not so much pro-war rallies as rallies against anyone who opposes the Bush administration's policies."
With a midterm election coming up in only two months, expect to see a lot more of these shallow attempts to portray liberals as, "a tax-raising, latte-drinking, sushi-eating, Volvo-driving, New York Times-reading, body-piercing, Hollywood-loving left-wing freak show." The arguments admittedly aren't very convincing. But when the target you're trying to reach includes this guy, they don't have to be.
