TGIF is another way to spell GIFT

A favorite song from a gifted group.
Enjoy the weekend folks, and don't forget:
Don't get too drunk until AFTER you leave work.

Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows

Wow, so much good news lately that I may have to put my cynicism on a shelf for a while - where it can keep company with my now-out-of-date pessimism. First of all the gulf is pretty much cleaned up now according to BP and the US government. Even PresBO himself agrees. Sure they've lied to us about this from the get-go, but I'm sure we can trust them this time.

PresBO also announced that troop withdrawal from Iraq was going to be on schedule, exactly as promised. Except that 50,000 troops will still be there, but thats OK! They're 'transitional!!' Please ignore the Blackwater/Xe mercenaries who will also remain behind sucking up US tax dollars to enrich the old Cheney cabal. Anyway the country has been turned into a stable and prosperous bastion of democracy, so mission accomplished there too. I haven't felt this good since I found out that waterboarding wasn't really torture, just a 'little splash of water.'

So come on join in everybody, "Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows.."

Because we need one, as usual. And as usual, I'm too damned lazy to put up anything of substance.

Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah

AKA: "PresBO's State of the Union Address."

(It'll be interesting to see how he tries to talk himself out of the mess he's gotten into after a full year of kow-towing to the Republican obstructionists, with nothing to show for it.)

Open Thread

I've been applying all my spare time for the last couple days to trying to fix a friend's computer. Who knew that on today's internet you need an anti-virus program that's up to date, an anti-spyware AND a firewall? At least. Otherwise your machine will turn into a spam-bot, slow down to a crawl, and send ads for boner juice all over the world 24/7 until your ISP bans you for breaching their terms of service.

So this is what I've been doing a lot lately:

And with lots of this going on

On the thread below

it's gotten pretty long. So here's a new one.

Hopefully I'll scrape together some time to put up a real post sometime in the near future.

This Blog Needs a New Thread

And Since We Haven't Posted a Music Video
For a While
This classic from the Staples Singers totally rocked my world when Rachel Maddow used it on her New Years Eve show. I'm using it in hopes that some of her cool will rub off on me.

New Year Open Thread

This image, found on the nets, is titled Happy New Years 2000. Whether you think the decade ends tonight (technically not, but most people see decades that way if not centuries) or a year hence, it's been pretty crappy hasn't it? Filled with disasters. Bush. 9/11. Bush. Katrina. Bush. A tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands in Indonesia. Bush. Afghanistan. Bush. Iraq. Bush. Abu Ghraib. Bush. Gitmo. Bush. Economic meltdown, and did I mention Bush?

Then there was the biggest disaster of all, Cheney.

Anyway, I'll be glad to be shed of the era that the Brits call the Naughties. Although honestly I don't think that a change of the tens column digit is anything to hang our hopes on.

Try to avoid driving drunk tonight, and if you can't at least try to remember that the road is that thing between the two lines of telephone poles. And keep the shiny side up.

It Looks Like That Time of the Year Again.

And well past time for a new thread, don't you think?

Drive safely. Unruliness is one thing, but even I obey the rules of the road.

Mission Accomplished

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal,
before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon
and returning him safely to the Earth.

-- John F. Kennedy, May 25, 1961 --"

I didn't want to give short shrift to this, technically the most difficult task of this or any moon mission, and the one that really meant the most to the astronauts and their families. The splashdown occurred at 16:50:35 UTC on July 24, 1969 @ 13°19′N 169°9′W.

Happy 4th of July (Bumped)

Bear With Me

I just had to reprint this brief photo essay that I just got in my inbox from Len Hart, The Existentialist Cowboy. I doubt he'll put it up on his own blog, so I feel OK in stealing it from him.
Polar Bear: I Come in Peace
Stuart Brown describes Norbert Rosing's striking images of
a wild polar bear coming upon tethered sled-dogs
in the wilds of Canada's Hudson Bay.

The photographer was sure that he was going to see the end of his dogs
when the polar bear wandered in, but ...

The Polar Bear returned every night that week
to play with the dogs.

Peace on Earth, Good Will To Men (and Polar Bears.)

Halloween Open Thread

Boo!

I can't really say whether this foul fellow is just a trick or treater dressed up as John McCain's last ghost of a chance of an electoral victory or a Klukker. Come to think of it, it probably amounts to the same thing.

Scariest costume this year? President Sarah Palin, for sure. And while I don't think it's likely, it's still a possibility. Any combination of Diebold vote-flipping and recurrance of melanoma and Bible Spice could be anointing herself with frankincense and myrrh come next January. Those of you inclined to pray that this never happens, I urge you to do so. The rest of you? Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
